Create A Foam Hummingbird

The hummingbird is one of the smallest birds in existence.

Birdwatching is a wonderful hobby for many people, but some people want to do more to hold on to the allure of those fascinating, flighted creatures. While taxidermists can capture and preserve the beauty of majestic birds by dressing and stuffing their carcasses, you can preserve that same beauty without having to handle any dead animal parts. By making a realistic-looking hummingbird model out of Styrofoam, you can enjoy the grace and charm of this winged wonder for years to come.

Instructions

1. Cut off a 2-inch cube from the large Styrofoam cube. On the side of the 2-inch cube, draw an outline of a hummingbird based on the picture you have selected. Start with an elongated 'S' shape. This will be the hummingbird back. Then, draw a round circle for the hummingbird head and lastly, another shape like a backward and elongated 'C" connected the head and tail for the hummingbird belly.

2. Cut away all the foam outside of the hummingbird outline using your Styrofoam cutter. Gradually shave down the shape, rounding the edges and bringing out the shape of the bird. Brush off any Styrofoam debris.

3. Cut out two hummingbird wing shapes (based on pictures) from the cardstock. Glue these wings to the sides of the hummingbird.

4. Glue the feather to the surface of the bird, covering all areas of the Styrofoam. Cover the body and head area first, then the wings. Allow this to set completely (for several hours) before continuing. The color of the feathers is largely your choice. You can model your hummingbird after a particular species and try to match that species' feather color or you can be creative and pick feathers of whatever color you choose.

5. Glue the two eyes in their appropriate locations on the head of the hummingbird.

6. Snip off a 1½ inch section of the black coffee stirrer and glue it to the front of the hummingbird's head as the long beak.
