Homemade Invites With Down

Feathers add pizzazz and texture to your invitations.

Handmade invitations often pose an inexpensive alternative to formal, commercial invitations. Novelty invitations for a wedding or formal party often cost more because they're highly embellished. Instead of gouging your budget for the invites, make some embellished pieces at home. You can use whatever you have on hand, including feathers. Feathers give invitations some texture and a playful yet elegant feel.

Downy Invite

Feathered invitations don't have to look like fuzzy Muppets. Instead of using the whole feather, preserve the down to color in certain parts of an invitation. The down can replace paint, markers or even glitter. A child's glue stick is strong enough to adhere the down to the card in horizontal stripes, as coloring for flower petals or as a decorative border. If you want to get really involved, you can even make an argyle design with several colors of down. Simply sprinkle the down over the gluey parts of the card, shake away the excess and let it dry.

Feathery Flowers

Perhaps you've seen feathers crafted into roses and daisies as an alternative to silk flowers. This idea translates easily from three dimensions to two when decorating cards. The tips of the feathers often look a bit like flower petals. A few dovetail snips into the tip of each feather create petals for the flowers. Glue dots hold the centers in place, while white school glue or hot glue hold button flower centers tightly to the card. Create entire bouquet motifs with this method, especially if you're throwing a garden party.

Quills

Quills were popular before pencils and ballpoint pens became widely available, making them symbols of a simpler and more elegant time. If you're throwing a Victorian-style tea party, a steampunk gala or simply a very formal event, decorating your invites with quills will not go amiss.

Smaller feathers won't overpower these invites, and positioning them is easier than positioning larger feathers. The feathers should look as if they're attached to the message, evoking the feel that the message is quill-written. Clear superglue should hold the feather in place.

Fantasy World

Often, the more special and elaborate your celebration is, the more elaborate your invitations must be. The invitations set the tone for the celebration. If you're throwing a Fantasy-Land party complete with fairy costumes and toadstool cupcakes, your invites need to reflect that.

Feathers fused to your invitations give fairy wings texture, add a bit of style to a Mad Hatter hat or give an elfling an original skirt or cape. Draw or print out the invitations first, so you know where everything goes. Arrange the feathers, then glue them down one by one with thin stripes of clear glue.
