According to Montana Audubon, in 2010 the Official State Bird List contained 425 species, ranging from birds of prey such as the osprey, bald eagle and golden eagle to warblers, sparrows and wrens.
Western Meadowlark
The western meadowlark is the state bird of Montana and can typically be found in open fields and grassland. The male is recognizable by its striking yellow underparts, bold, black V across its breast, brown upperparts and wings, and short tail with white feathers on the outside.
Mountain Bluebird
The mountain bluebird is 6 inches long and predominantly blue in color. It is often confused with other species such as the eastern and western bluebirds. The adult male, however, lacks the reddish coloration on its underparts that is found in the other species.
Bald Eagle
Adult bald eagles are readily identifiable by their size---their wings can measure up to 8 feet, from tip to tip---as well as their white heads and tails and yellow beaks. Migrating eagles can be found throughout Montana.
