Your tree branch art can be as simple or elaborate as you wish.
A fallen tree branch is an interesting project material for the frugal crafter, but it requires care before it's ready to enter your home. Spray the branch with pesticide to kill any bugs lurking under the surface of the bark. Allow the pesticide to sit on the branch for 24 hours before you work with it.
Wall Hanging
Even the most attractive tree branch will lose it foliage as time passes, but that doesn't mean you can't preserve the attractive shape and bark of the branch in a wall hanging. Create fake foliage using tissue paper to add a personal touch to the branch. The tissue paper foliage won't fade over time like the actual foliage and gives you the opportunity to use any color of leaf you desire. Place the branch against a sturdy piece of cardboard and glue it in place. Glue the fake foliage to the cardboard as well to finish the project.
Walking Stick
A sturdy walking stick is both functional and fashionable. The walking stick can be any length you want, but aim for a branch that does not bow when you put your weight on it. Cut the bottom of the branch so it is flat. Glue a rubber stopper onto the bottom of the branch so it doesn't damage flooring when you bring it inside. Wrap bendable wire around the stick for decorative value. Attach leather bands to the top. Add decorations such as beads and feathers to the leather bands.
Branch Coasters
A tree branch is a large decoration that may be too cumbersome for your household. If you want to do something with that old branch instead of banishing it to the compost pile, consider cutting it into rustic coasters for use in your home. Measure the circumference of your branch to ensure it is at least 3 inches thick. Cut through the branch at 1.5-inch intervals to create thick, sturdy coasters. Add decorations to the coasters, such as painted designs, before you coat them in clear coat sealer. The sealer protects the wood from water damage and keeps the coasters looking new.
Talking Stick
Children can sometimes run over each other when trying to talk. A talking stick allows you to recycle a small tree branch and teach the children an important lesson in consideration. Choose a branch that is 2 inches thick and 1 foot long. Trim a suitable branch down to the correct size, if necessary. Cover one end of the stick in bird feathers. Glue the bird feathers in place and wrap the ends of the stick in leather cord. Add dangling decorations, such as beads and animal teeth, for added decorative appeal. Explain to the children that they can only talk if they hold the talking stick in their hands.
