Select A Pillow

Get the sleep you need with the best pillow for your head.

Pillows are very personal possessions. Some people choose to sleep with pillows and others choose not to use them. Still others start out the night with a pillow tucked under their heads and by morning the pillow is on the floor or somewhere else where the fitful sleeper tossed it aside during the night. For some people, there is no right pillow, but for others it is just a matter of sorting through the feathers and the fluff.

Instructions

1. Take note of the position you sleep in on a regular basis, whether it is on your side, back or stomach, and favor a flatter pillow if you sleep on your back. Prioritize support if you're a side sleeper and avoid bulk if you're a stomach sleeper.

2. Hold the pillow in your hands to gauge its relative weight. Pick pillows that are lighter and plumper than heavier, denser pillows.

3. Choose larger pillows noting that pillow sizes include standard, oversized standard, queen, king and European square.

4. Press your weight down upon the pillow and see how well it holds its shape. Select pillows that spring back into their original shape when you remove the weight from the pillow.

5. Balance the pillow over a narrow surface such as your arm. Observe the pillow and give a preference to ones that do not sag at the ends, because better pillows will have enough fill to hold themselves up.

6. Examine the outer covering and look to see if the weave appears tight enough to hold the contents inside the covering.

7. Read the label to learn about its contents. Bypass pillows that do not have a label secured properly to them as required by federal law.

8. Expect to pay more for pillows made of down as well as those with the softest and most resilient feathers, such as goose feathers, and less for less buoyant feathers with weak quill shafts, such as turkey and chicken feathers.

9. Give a preference to solid synthetic pillows over loose-fill pillows, because solid fill will retain its shape better and last longer.
