Keep your dentures clean to prolong their life.
Dentures are as much a responsibility as your natural teeth. Proper care and cleaning can keep your dentures in shape and stain-free for years. While regular visits to your dentist helps tremendously, there are a few things you can do at home to ensure that your dentures stay looking and feeling like new.
Daily Cleaning
Cleaning your dentures daily will help to fight plaque build-up and the odor that occurs when your saliva and mouth bacteria sit on the dentures for extended periods of time. Also, remove any adhesive strips or paste and replace with fresh strips or paste. Hold your dentures securely while cleaning them, over a water-filled sink or a towel, to avoid breaking them if they are dropped.
Brushing
Brush your dentures on all sides with a soft-bristled denture brush and denture cleaning paste. Denture brushes are specially shaped for dentures. Using a regular toothbrush will cause you to miss the hard-to-reach spots, or cause you to damage the denture by trying to squeeze the regular brush into those spots.
Soaking
Soak them in a denture-cleaning solution for at least 15 minutes or as long as overnight. If you will have your dentures removed for any length of time, leave them to soak to prevent drying. Never use hot water to soak your dentures. Hot water can warp the material and change the shape and fit of your dentures.
Cleaning Your Mouth
Keep your mouth clean as well as your dentures to protect your gums and remove the bacteria that accumulates under your dentures. Brush your gums, the roof of your mouth, your tongue and any natural teeth you have. Floss your natural teeth as well and rinse with a fluoride mouthwash. Use mouthwash throughout the day (with your dentures in place) to freshen your mouth and kill bacteria between cleanings.
