Create A Nest Having A Balloon & Yarn

Bird nests made from yarn can include fake eggs in the middle.

Making a bird nest out of a balloon and yarn can be a collective classroom project or used as a project to help raise money for various causes. Variations of this craft project include adding small painted birds, painting real boiled eggs and placing them in the middle of the finished nest or gluing feathers to different parts of the yarn to make it look more real.

Instructions

1. Spread out newspaper on a flat work surface. The newspaper will prevent the rest of the material from soiling the work surface and will aid in clean up when you finish.

2. Place a bowl and a small shallow baking pan such as a cake pan or casserole pan on the newspaper.

3. Pour or squeeze the glue into the bowl and set the glue aside. There is no right or wrong amount as you can always add more glue to the bowl as needed.

4. Blow up the balloon as large as you want. Keeping the balloon as round as possible will keep the shape of the nest round. Place the balloon into the cake or casserole pan to keep it in one place as you work with it.

5. Cut the yarn into various lengths between 12 inches and 18 inches each if you want a nest pattern that has a more "criss-cross" look. Cut the yarn into 24-inch or 36-inch pieces if you want to experiment with more loops or swirly patterns.

6. Dip each strand of yarn into the glue in the bowl so that the yarn is saturated. Place the yarn over the roundest part of the balloon from one side to the other.

7. Continue applying the yarn until you've made the shape of a bird nest around one side of the balloon. Fill in most -- but not all -- of the empty spots to make it look more like a real nest.

8. Allow the glue to dry for at least six hours or until the yarn is no longer sticky to the touch. Pop the balloon with a toothpick, and remove the balloon from the inside of the nest.
