Remove blood stains from feathers with turpentine.
Blood stains on feathers can occur on down jackets, pillows, bedding and any other item filled with down. In addition, taxidermists are often confronted with the problem of removing blood stains from bird feathers before they can stuff an animal. Because of the unique pattern of the feathers, the blood stains often completely permeate the plumage. Although it may seem as if removing the blood stains is impossible, it is actually quite easy if you use the proper materials and cleaning solution.
Instructions
1. Lay a towel on a flat surface and arrange the bloody feathers on top of the towel in a single layer.
2. Dampen a sponge with warm water and squeeze the sponge to remove as much water as possible.
3. Place the dampened sponge on top of one blood stained feather and wipe the feather to remove as much of the blood stain as possible. Always move the sponge from the base of the feather to the tip so as not to misshapen the feather.
4. Rinse the sponge in clean, warm water and repeat the process until most of the blood stain is removed. Clean any other stained feathers using the same technique.
5. Let the feathers sit for one to two minutes to allow the stain to soften. Place a dry towel on top of the feathers and press down gently as you move the towel from the base of the feathers to the tip. Turn the towel to a new section and repeat to remove as much moisture as possible.
6. Place 1 tablespoon of clear turpentine onto a cloth, or clean sponge, and wipe it over the feathers to remove all final traces of the blood stain.
7. Place the feathers in an area with good air circulation to dry and to allow the turpentine smell to dissipate.
