Switch Flop Fundraiser Ideas

Flip flops are a sporty fundraising idea.

For a fundraising idea sure not to flop, look down -- at your feet. Focusing fundraising efforts on a flip flop theme may be a way to bring a warm summer feeling to potential donors. With a candy-colored array of hues, inexpensive price tags and the ease of going from pool to shopping mall, flip flops are a popular choice across the country. Feature flip flops as a fundraiser, and put your best foot forward.

Feet Fundraiser

Take a cue from celebrity charity fundraisers and get feet (and wallets) flopping with decorated flip flops. At events such as the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation charity fundraiser, celebrities were recruited to decorate pink rubber ducks to be auctioned to the public, benefiting the organization. Celebrities emblazoned the floaters with glitter, gems and feathers. Purchase a bulk supply of plain-colored flip flops (often on major clearance right before Labor Day), and craft supplies from a hobby shop or dollar store, such as stick-on gems, ribbon, fabric and tiny stones. Ask local celebrities or anyone you may have in your contact roster to decorate a flip flop. Otherwise, turn it into a competition within your group, having employees or teams work to decorate the most outrageous flip flop. Auction them in the community, and you'll have money to "foot" your bills.

Appropriate Accessories

Flip flops can be a casual way to top off an outfit, but to complete the look, other accessories seal the deal. Create a fundraising package that centers on flip flops but uses the rubber shoes as a way to improve an entire outfit. Find a woven straw or canvas bag that picks up a color within the flip flops, along with a hat, plastic sunglasses, a chunky bangle and a scarf, all with the same or similar pattern or a matching hue. Toss everything but the scarf and flip flops in the bag. Wind the scarf through the flip flop tongs so they hang outside the bag and cover the whole thing with cellophane and a bow. Create different themes, such as leopard print and polka dot, then set out the baskets for a silent auction.

Foot-Forward Fashion

The ABC news show "Good Morning America" stated that flip flops were one of the 2010 best parts of summer. All year long, flip flops are chosen as a quick and simple way to walk out, but people may be flipping for flip flops a little too quickly and falling into fashion traps. Consider adding an item to your fundraising list where people can bid on a personal shopping assistant or wardrobe counselor to help them match flip flops to the appropriate outfits. A quick closet overview can keep someone from committing a fashion faux pas, such as wearing white tube socks with flip flops or sporting battered, crumbling flip flops to an upscale event. Inquire about personal shoppers at large department stores, or ask someone with fashion sense you admire to donate her time to the cause.
