Create A Cherokee Hatchet

Make a Cherokee hatchet using craft supplies.

When you are teaching children about Cherokee culture, you can make the lesson more exciting by providing the kids with a hands-on craft related to Cherokee heritage. For example, the children can make Cherokee hatchets using a few basic materials that can be purchased from an arts and crafts supply store. This enables the kids to feel more involved in learning about Cherokee culture, which encourages them to delve deeper into learning about Native studies.

Instructions

1. Cut out a trapezoid from heavy-duty cardboard using scissors to measure 5 inches on the wide end and 3 inches on the short end.

2. Paint the cardboard trapezoid using gray acrylic paint. Allow the paint to dry for 20 minutes. This will make the trapezoid look like a slate hatchet tip.

3. Hold a 1-inch thick wooden dowel in your hand and saw straight down into one end by 2 inches.

4. Insert the cardboard piece into the slit in the wooden dowel. Position the cardboard so that the small end sticks out on one side by 2 inches.

5. Cut a ribbon using scissors to measure 18 inches long. Wrap the ribbon around the area where the cardboard hatchet tip meets the dowel. Tie the ends of the ribbon together tightly, leaving 3 to 4 inches on both ends.

6. Push a hot glue stick into a hot glue gun, then plug in the hot glue gun to heat up for 10 minutes.

7. Squeeze a pea-sized dollop of hot glue onto the ends of the ribbons. Press two colorful feathers onto each hot glue dollop and hold them in place for one minute to allow the hot glue to cool.
