Oklahoma Flag
History
The current Oklahoma flag is blue with a centered emblem that consists of an Osage Indian warrior's shield made of buffalo skin and decorated with seven eagle feathers and six crosses. The word "Oklahoma" is printed directly under the shield.
First Flag: 1911
Four years after Oklahoma was established as the 46th state in the Union in 1907, the first state flag was adopted, using the red-white-blue template of the U.S. flag for its blue-edged white star set in a red base. However, with the Russian Revolution in 1917, its dominant red color eventually grew unpopular due to people thinking it looked communist.
1925 Revision
The 1925 flag set the basis for the modern-day incarnation, with the elaborately decorated Osage war shield. The blue flag drew inspiration from the one Choctaw warriors used during the American Civil War (1861 to 1865).
1941 Revision
In 1941, the state name "Oklahoma" was added under the shield. However, the addition was not popular in some quarters as it was felt that the name was redundant.
1988 Resolution
In 1988, in response to the variance of flag colors being manufactured, the Oklahoma State Legislature voted to preserve and maintain the state flag as modified in 1925, with the addition of the state name in 1941.
Oklahoma Flag Law
Title 25 in Oklahoma state laws outlines the state flag's design, as well as the appropriate manner in which it should be displayed by public institutions, schools and state agencies.
