The faux-swan napkin can stand up on its own, on a plate or at the table.
Folding the napkins at a dinner table can give a dinner party a special feel and will impress your guests. They can help to jazz up an otherwise ordinary place setting, or can even support the theme of a party or social event. Although some napkin folds may be complicated, there are other napkin folds, such as the swan, which are much easier and will still look like you put a lot of effort into them. Because the swan napkin is most easily folded from a paper napkin, you won't even be required to have fancy cloth napkins at hand.
Instructions
1. Turn the paper napkin so the corner where all the loose corners meet is at the top of the model.
2. Fold the napkin in half, bringing the right hand corner to meet the left hand corner. Crease and unfold. This creates the center line.
3. Fold the lower right hand edge in, so it lies along the center line. Fold the lower left hand edge in so it, too, lies along the center line, next to the right hand edge you just folded in. This creates the kite base.
4. Flip the model over. Fold the lower right hand edge in again on this side, so it lies along the center line. Fold the lower left hand edge inward in the same manner. This narrows to the kite shape of the model.
5. Fold the bottom point of the model up so it touches the top corner.
6. Fold the top layer of the top corner you folded up in the previous step back down, about one third of the way. This will eventually be the head of the swan.
7. Flip the paper over again. Fold the paper in half, folding all layers of paper, by bringing the right hand side of the model to meet the left hand side.
8. Rotate the model to the left. Pinch the tail of the swan, which is the very left side of the model. Keep it still as you grasp the head and neck parts of the swan. Pull the neck up, pinching the crease at the head and neck so the neck stays upright.
9. Pinch the head of the bird and tilt it upward until it looks right to you. At this point you have created the traditional origami swan. However, extra feathers can be created by using the layers of the napkin.
10. Create extra feathers by holding the swan in place by grasping the neck. Gently pull the extra layers of paper at the swan's back, the left hand side of the model, upward toward the head. Separate each layer, tugging and pinching the layers into place until the swan looks how you want it. The swan is now complete and will stand on its own on a plate or next to a place setting.
