Choose A Figure Skating Dress For Competition

When deciding on a figure skating dress for competition, you want to consider the overall theme of your skating program. If the music you are working with evokes a certain mood or feeling, you will want your costume to balance this emotion or express it further using color and design elements. You want to pick a design that will allow you to move through your routine comfortably without restriction. Your skate dress should fit your body type and be comfortable to wear. Basing your competition dress cut from a favorite practice skating dress is a good starting point.

Instructions

1. Brainstorm ideas for costume color and design and make a basic sketch of your costume design if you are having one custom made. Depending on the music you will be using, you will want your outfit to reflect a certain mood or emotion without being too overdone. Make a list of elements you like from previous costumes or practice outfits that you want to have in a competition costume.

2. Determine the type of costume you will need. First determine an outfit for everyday practice that is similar to your competition costume. You don't need to look into fine details such as beading and sequins attached to an outfit--just focus on costumes that fit comfortably and are similar in cut and shape.

3. Pick a costume in your favorite color as an everyday costume choice. If you are set on a costume cut, begin looking for costume ideas for competition. Check figure skating competition websites or dress designer sites for ideas.

4. Listen to the music for your routine and consider the movements you have choreographed. In a routine with a demanding number of stunts like jumps and speed or agility moves, you will want to consider costume cuts, allowing for a more snug fit. A snugger-fitting costume will help in cutting down on wind resistance to aid in the speed and smoothness of your turns and other elements.

5. Check competition rules for regulations governing costume design before you purchase a new costume. Depending on your competition level and area, such as regional, state, national or international, the requirements for length of a costume skirt, height of splits or cut of the costume can vary.

6. Test your costume in a practice run. Wear your costume in a full performance of a routine to ensure you are able to move without too much resistance. Have your costume tailored where needed to ensure the proper fit.

7. Have your costume specially cleaned when needed if the fabric needs special care or if there are additions to the costume that need special attention to prevent damaging while cleaning.
