Repair A Nail Hole In Aluminum Roof

Save money by repairing your own aluminum roof.

Aluminum roofs are regaining popularity among roof installers and homeowners. They no longer look like the corrugated ridged metal of years ago. Manufacturers now fabricate aluminum roofs to resemble tile, shingles, shakes and slate. Aluminum roofs are durable, long lasting and hard wearing, but not impervious to damage. Nail holes allow water to enter the home. Water creates much structural damage, including mold and mildew growth or wood rot. Repairing a nail hole as soon as it occurs is necessary to avoid further damage and costly repairs.

Instructions

1. Wash a 6-by-6-inch area around the nail hole with trisodium phosphate (TSP) using a stiff scrub brush to remove dirt and debris. Dry thoroughly.

2. Cut two 2-by-2-inch squares with scissors or shears from a roll of fiberglass mesh screening.

3. Apply a layer of roofing cement over and around the nail hole with a paintbrush.

4. Place one fiberglass mesh patch on top of the roofing cement covering the nail hole. Rub the patch to press it firmly into the roofing cement.

5. Paint a layer of roofing cement over the patch extending it 1-inch from the edge of the patch onto the roof. Feather the roofing cement as you move away from the patch.

6. Position the second fiberglass mesh patch over the first patch and press it into the roofing cement, adhere it firmly to the first patch and roof.

7. Paint a layer of roofing cement over the patch feathering the edges.
