Make An Egg Survive A Drop

Pack your egg correctly to prevent it from cracking when dropped.

One of the most entertaining science experiments challenges students to build a container using only basic materials that will prevent an egg from cracking when dropped from the top of a two-story building. Students can learn about the basic forces of physics such as velocity, gravity and acceleration in a fun experiment that is sure to create suspense. As an added bonus -- if it's done correctly -- there won't be any mess to clean up.

Instructions

1. Glue wooden craft sticks together with hot glue, overlapping the ends of the sticks to form a square. Continue this pattern upward until you create a small box that will fit an egg and cushioning.

2. Tape a row of plastic straws to the bottom of the box. Leave the top of the box open.

3. Insert several cotton balls inside the box. Insert the egg. Add more cushioning on top so that the egg is protected on all sides.

4. Tape a row of plastic straws to the top of the box as you did with the bottom of the box. The straws serve as an extra form of cushioning if the box hits the ground at an angle.

5. Place the box inside a plastic bag. Use rubber bands to secure the plastic bag to the box, so that it is completely covered.

6. Place the covered box in another plastic bag. Do not secure the second plastic bag to the box.

7. Inflate balloons and tie to the handles of the second plastic bag. This will slow the descent of the box.
