Chilean Flamingo Facts
The Chilean flamingo is a bird that is native to southern regions of South America, including Uruguay, Bolivia, Peru, Argentina and Chile. The Chilean flamingo is a large bird that is much the same today as it was 30 million years ago. Able to live in harsh conditions, the Chilean flamingo is normally found in large numbers as their flocks can have thousands of members.
Description
Standing as tall as five feet, Chilean flamingo adults can be as heavy as 16 pounds. The neck is long as are the legs, and the bird has pink feathers with black wings. The bird's bill is large and shaped like a banana.
Characteristics
The Chilean flamingo's hearing is acute but its sense of smell is poorly developed. The bird can live as long as 50 years in rare instances, but 20 to 30 years is the average life expectancy.
One Leg Stance
The Chilean flamingo has the ability, like all flamingos, to stand on one leg to conserve heat. The bird can lock its leg into a stable position and then stand facing any bad weather, such as rain and wind. This keeps the elements out of its feathers.
Diet
The Chilean flamingo dines on such creatures as frogs, small fish, seeds, and the algae that lives in lakes and marshes. These birds filter their food through their beaks, which acts almost like a strainer, before swallowing it.
Flocks
The social nature of the flamingo is evident by the fact that they do almost everything in very large groups. Chilean flamingos fly together, eat as a flock and also reproduce in colonies of many birds.
