Make Hair Clips Having A Feather & Beads

Feathers can be used to create beautiful hair clips.

Long strands of beads and feathers clipped into the hair are perennial style statements, complimenting boho, hippie and ethnic fashions equally. Retails stores can charge big bucks for bead and feather hair clips, and you are limited by the styles and colors that are available. Alleviate both concerns by creating hair clips yourself, where you are limited only by your imagination.

Instructions

1. Tie a piece or two of leather cord onto the loop end of a small alligator clip with teeth, using a knot. The length of cord that you use depends on how long you want the feather and the beads to dangle, either ending the length just before the end of your hair or allowing the clip to dangle below the hair length.

2. Tie a small piece of sturdy cotton string in a similar color to the leather onto the alligator clip using a knot. The length of string should be a few inches long, adjusted depending on the length of the hair and clip.

3. Pull any downy barbs off the quill of a feather. The downy barbs are the soft, flexible wisps at the end of the feather by the quill. These will get tangled in the hair and tend to break easily, so they are best removed.

4. Tie the quill of the feather to the end of the string. Dab a bit of hot glue onto the knot to secure the feather to the string.

5. String beads onto the length of leather. Beads can either be strung in a solid strand or you can tie periodic knots in the leather between beads to create gaps in the beading. Repeat on the second strand, if using.

6. Fasten a knot in the end of the leather to secure the beads. Use a pair of pliers to hold onto the small end of the knot and pull the knot as tight as possible. Repeat on the knot holding the leather to the clip.

7. Decorate the clip itself by gluing small beads, sequins or a small strip of ribbon to the top of the clip. You can leave the clip undecorated if it is a color that you prefer or simply hide the clip in your hair instead.
