Grocery store paper bags make perfect children's hats.
Creating decorative paper hats is a creative and inexpensive craft project for girls of all ages. Paper hats can liven up children's events, birthday parties or nearly any kid festivities. Household supplies can be used and reused to add elaborate details to the outside of the hat. Construction paper cut-outs, pipe cleaners, pom-poms, glitter, felt, ribbon and feathers can add color and texture to the surface of a fitted paper hat. Using a standard size paper grocery bag allows plenty of room to decorate.
Instructions
1. Open a standard size paper grocery bag and place its base flat on a table. Roll the top of the paper bag down approximately 6-inches.
2. Place the opening of the paper bag over the girl's head. Pinch the brim or folded top of the paper bag to a comfortable fit. Secure the brim of the hat in place with clear packaging tape.
3. Create antennae on the paper hat with pipe cleaners and pom-poms. Poke one end of a colored pipe cleaner into the paper hat top and tape to secure. Coil the pipe cleaner around a pencil for a spiral effect. Glue a pom-pom to the other end of the pipe cleaner. Repeat with the second antennae.
4. Draw several large flowers on construction paper to cover the surface of the paper hat. Add details to the flowers with colored pencils or makers if desired. Create two holes in the center of the flower with a hole-punch. String ribbon through the holes and curl the ribbon with scissors. Glue the flowers to the hat.
5. Add decorative items to the paper hat to make it as simple or elaborate as you'd like. Glue colorful feathers, pom-poms, felt or glitter around the flowers.
