Children hear about crows through stories and poems as being birds that are dark and mysterious. The crow's physical characteristics also help portray a haunting image. Create crafts of crows to help children learn more about the bird. Children may also create a happier facial expression for crows in crafts.
Puppet
Children use puppets to role play. Create a crow puppet using a paper bag. Children can color the outside of the paper bag black and draw patterns for the crow's beak, wings and feet on colored construction paper. Stick the cut-out patterns to the paper bag that is positioned upside down. Have the plain side of the paper bag lay on a flat surface. Stick the beak to the side of the paper bag with the flap. One wing goes on each side of the bag and the feet are positioned near the bag's opening. Add large wiggly eyes above the beak, black feathers above the eyes and along the wings and the crow puppet is ready for children to use for role playing.
Mask
Children can pretend they are crows by crafting a mask using paper plate. Color the bottom side of the plate black. Cut out two circles from the plate so that children can see through it. Apply a beak to the paper plate by cutting a triangle from orange construction paper. Take black feathers and glue them to the top of the mask. Add a craft stick to the other side of the mask so that it hangs out from below for children to hold up the mask to their face.
Pom-Pom Figure
Craft a crow for display using pom-poms. Take two black colored pom-poms of different sizes and glue the smaller pom-pom on top of the larger one. The smaller pom-pom will serve as the crow's head and the larger pom-pom will serve as the crow's body. Glue a black feather on each side of the larger pom-pom as the crow's wings and glue one on the back for the crow's tail. Cut out a triangle from orange felt and glue it to the smaller pom-pom to serve as the beak. Add sticker eyes above the beak and orange pipe cleaner feet to the bottom of the larger pom pom and the craft is ready for display on a child's desk.
Hand and Footprint Paper Art
The Free Kids Crafts website recommends that children use their own hand and footprints to create crow paper art. The handprint serves as the crow's wings and the footprint serves as the crow's body. Trace both hands and one foot on black construction paper and cut out the patterns. Draw a crow's head and feet, then glue the head cutout to the heel of the footprint, one hand print to each side of the footprint and the crow's feet to the toes area of the footprint. Add black feathers to the craft for a fun addition. This paper art can be taped to the window or the wall for display.
