Thanksgiving Writing Activities For Elementary

Themed writing assignments enhance writing skills.

The Thanksgiving holiday provides inspiration for elementary writing activities. Regular writing activities help improve the students' writing skills, which helps them be more successful in all subject areas. The activities make writing time more interesting and relevant to the young kids who are excited about the upcoming holiday. Adjust the Thanksgiving writing assignments to match the ability of your students.

Turkey Stories

Turkeys take center stage as Thanksgiving approaches. This writing activity doubles as a wall decoration for the classroom. Each child needs a turkey body and head cut from construction paper, as well as several colorful feathers cut from construction paper. The kids write a story with a Thanksgiving theme. You can assign a specific story angle or let the kids come up with their own ideas. After writing and revising the story on a piece of regular paper, the kids transfer it onto the turkey feathers. They write a line on each feather to create the story. The kids then glue the turkey feathers onto the body in the correct order so others can read the story.

Thankful List

A list of things the kids are thankful for makes a shorter writing assignment. This idea departs from the traditional story format for variety during writing class. Specify the minimum number of items that the kids need to put on the list to ensure they get plenty of writing practice out of the project. Decide if you want them to write just the word of the item they are thankful for or if you want them to write an entire sentence about each thing. For example, you might have them write a sentence about why they are thankful for their families rather than just writing "family" on the list.

Turkey's Perspective

For a creative story topic, have the kids write about Thanksgiving from the perspective of a turkey. The kids have to imagine how a turkey might feel as Thanksgiving approaches. They could write about how a turkey would avoid being eaten on Thanksgiving or how he convinced the family to eat something different. Encourage them to be creative with the stories.

Thanksgiving How-to

A how-to writing assignment helps kids learn describe a process step by step. Each child picks an activity or project related to Thanksgiving. Ideas include cooking a turkey, making pumpkin pie or making a paper turkey craft. The kids write the procedure for completing the selected Thanksgiving task. Depending on the specific grade level, the kids might come up with some creative steps if they don't actually know complete the task. This writing activity lends itself well to being turned into a book. Have the kids write each step on a separate page along with an illustration.
