Cut Feathering Into Lengthy Hair

You can easily cut feathered hair with grooming scissors.

Styling your long hair with the feathered look harkens back to the era of Farah Fawcett while still producing a modern edge that shows off the length of the hair. You can create this style by using a simple cutting technique that angles the hair around the face. Feathered hair also can be cut and styled in the bangs for a unique look that is easy to maintain.

Instructions

1. Dampen hair by spritzing it with a spray bottle of water. Brush it out flat. This will make it easier to cut and reduce the risk of mistakes.

2. Grip the front one inch of the hair at the crown of the head (the area where one would wear a yamaka), and pull it upward. Holding the ends of this piece of hair between your fingers, cut away from the face, removing about one inch of hair with small diagonal cuts. This is called the point-cutting technique, which causes the hair to fall in the soft, feathery look.

3. Grip the middle one inch of the hair at the crown and pull it upward. Holding these ends between your fingers, cut away from the face, using the point-cutting technique to remove about one inch of hair.

4. Grip the back one inch of the hair at the crown and pull it upward. Holding these ends between your fingers, cut away from the face, using the point-cutting technique to remove about one inch of hair.

5. Brush the front of the hair over the face, where bangs would be Pull this hair forward, away from the face, and cut the hair straight across about where the nose is.

6. Separate the bang pieces in half. On the left half, cut a diagonal line starting at about eye level and going toward the ear. Repeat this with the right half, making the famous feathered bangs when dry.
