Repair Netting On Vintage Hats

Sometimes replacing the damaged netting is the best option.

Vintage hats can either be incorporated into a wardrobe to add flair or displayed on hat stands. Many vintage hat styles use netting to form half-veils that fall across the face. These veils are very delicate, and will sometimes tear. These tears can sometimes be mended but the netting may need to be replaced if it is torn beyond repair. The veil can be replaced if you know hand sew a few basic stitches.

Instructions

Repairing the Netting

1. Thread a darning needle with thread that exactly matches the torn netting. Tie a knot in the thread bottom to keep it from pulling through the needle's eye.

2. Hold the hat in one hand and carefully pull the thread into the torn veil. Hide the knot in a spot that won't show or be pulled through the netting.

3. Use small stitches to mend the torn netting where it has become torn or has holes. This technique it best for hats that will only be displayed, as there is no way to sew netting where the mending attempts won't show through.

Replacing the Vintage Netting

4. Remove the old netting with scissors. An easier way to repair a vintage hat if the netting is damaged extensively is to remove the netting completely and add new netting in its place.

5. Measure the old netting and cut a piece of new netting 1 inch larger on all sides to allow for seam allowance.

6. Fold over the netting and sew a hem into the section that will flow across the face. Attach the netting to the vintage hat by hand-stitching the new netting into place. This technique is best if you plan on wearing the vintage hat because the new netting will be sturdier than its vintage counterpart.
