Execute Feathering Approaches To Painting

Give your walls a creative faux finish.

Adding a faux finish to the walls in your home brings texture and dimension to the space while adding a touch of creativity. The feathering technique uses a feather duster to swirl and dab color onto your walls in a random, textured fashion. Since there is no specific pattern for applying the paint, this technique is very forgiving and appropriate for everyone interested in adding a faux finish to their walls.

Instructions

1. Select your base and top coats. Feathering works best when you use two slightly different colors. The top color should be lighter than the base coat. For example, you could use a sky blue for the base coat and a pale powder blue for the top coat.

2. Prep your area by laying down drop cloths on the floor and furniture. Tape off the trim and ceilings to prevent paint from getting on these areas.

3. Roll one coat of primer onto your walls. This will create the ideal base for your color. Allow it to dry for the recommended time.

4. Apply the base coat to your walls. Depending on the formulation and color, you may have to apply two coats. If so, allow the paint to dry for recommended time then follow with a second coat. Allow the wall to dry fully before proceeding.

5. Pour the top coat into a fresh paint tray. Lightly dab the tips of your feather duster into the paint.

6. Press the feathers lightly onto the wall then lift, move slightly, and press again. This will give you a leaf-like pattern.

7. Swirl the feathers onto the wall by flicking your wrist in a "C" shape. This will give you soft, wispy waves.

8. Dab the feathers onto the wall repeatedly in a stippling motion. This will give an antiqued texture.

9. Apply the paint using your feather duster to the entire room. Change to a fresh duster whenever you notice that the feathers have become too saturated in paint or your design is losing detail.

10. Allow the top coat to dry for the recommended time.
