Tie Minijigs For Trout

Tie mini jigs to attract feeding trout.

A mini jig is used to attract trout species in a range of water conditions from small spring creeks to large lakes. Brown and rainbow trout are two species that jigs are used to attract. A custom mini jig is tied in much the same manner as a panfish jig and allows the use of colors based on personal preference, time of year and fishing conditions.

Instructions

1. Place a small jig head in the jaws of a fly-tying vise. Position the bend of the hook in the vise jaws with the point of the hook on the bottom.

2. Apply head cement to the hook shank at the base of the lead jig head.

3. Wrap black thread around the shank of the hook. Begin at the base of the lead jig head and work the thread down the shank for 1/2 inch. Wrap the thread back up to the base of the lead jig head.

4. Choose a clump of marabou feathers in the color of choice. Select bright colors for use when water is stained or dirty and dull subdued colors when water is low and clear. Select the color based on personal preference and conditions.

5. Hold the stiff quill end of the feather with one hand and slide the thumb and index finger down the feather to gather it together. Place the feather on the shank of the hook with the stiff quill extending over and to the front of the jig head.

6. Position the feathers so that they will cover the top and sides of the hook shank. Secure the feathers to the hook shank with several turns of thread. Trim the quill end of the marabou feather at the base of the lead jig head with scissors.

7. Rotate the jaws of the vise so the hook point is now on top and the bottom of the hook shank is easily accessible.

8. Choose a matching or contrasting clump of marabou feathers based on personal preference. Hold the stiff quill end and gather the feathers as before. Place the feathers on the hook shank with the larger quill end extending over and beyond the lead jig head. Wrap the feathers with black thread to secure them to the shank. Trim the large quill end flush at the base of the jig head with scissors.

9. Finish the mini trout jig with several turns of black thread at the base of the jig head. Tie the thread off and cut it free with scissors. Apply a coat of head cement to protect the thread and help prevent unraveling.
