Create A Three Cornered Paper Hat

Newspapers can make great hats.

Paper hats are an oldie but a goodie. These hats are fun to make for children’s parties or entertaining the grandchildren. Use newspaper, wrapping paper or construction paper to make paper hats. Decorate the hats with feathers, ribbons or color them with decorative pictures. Use your creativity to create a three-quarter paper hat. These hats are also called a pirate hat or a sailor hat. A regular size newspaper makes a hat of average size.

Instructions

1. Take one fully opened sheet of standard daily newspaper (24 by 21 inches) and fold it in half lengthwise. The folded paper will measure 12 by 21 inches. Place it on a table so that the folded edge is away from you. Crease the fold with your fingers. The size of paper can vary to make larger or smaller hats.

2. Keep the folded edge away from you. Bend down the right and left upper corners diagonally to meet in the middle of the paper. Each corner will be shaped like a triangle. Crease the fold with your fingers. There should be two strips of newspaper at the bottom of the hat (unfolded edge) a couple of inches wide. If there is not a strip of newspaper at the bottom then refold the triangles up a little higher. Note: The triangles do not have to meet in the middle.

3. Take the top strip of newspaper that is at the bottom of the hat and fold it up as far as will go to cover the bottom of the triangles. Crease the fold with your fingers.

4. Carefully flip the paper hat over and lay it on the table. Take the other strip at the bottom of the hat and fold it up as far as it will go to cover the bottom of the triangles. Crease the fold with your fingers. This piece should be folded the same height as the first side.

5. Carefully pick up the paper hat and open it by pulling apart the bottom. The point is the top of the hat. Use tape to secure the hat if it does not hold itself together.

6. Decorate the hat with colorful paper, feathers, markers or stickers.
