Remove debris from the holes before patching.
Over time, the asphalt in walkways deteriorates from exposure to rain, freezing and thawing, causing large holes to form. With a few tools, in just a few hours, you can patch large holes in asphalt walkways. Apply an asphalt sealant after patching holes to protect the asphalt and increase the lifespan of the walkway.
Instructions
1. Remove all loose debris from the hole.
2. Undercut the edge of the asphalt around the hole with the cold chisel and rubber-headed hammer. Place the cold chisel on an angle so it will remove asphalt behind the top layer. Remove 1 ½ to 2 inches of asphalt under the top layer so the top layer of asphalt is a ledge over the void underneath.
3. Use a trowel to press cold patch asphalt into the void under the top of the asphalt. Fill the hole from the edges to the center of the hole. Overfill the patch by about an inch toward the center.
4. Place a 2-foot piece of 2-by-4 on the cold patch and rub it around the patch to feather the patch into the existing asphalt walkway.
