Create A Feather Hat Pad

Make a feather hat pad using craft supplies.

If you are putting together a turn-of-the-century outfit for a theatrical play, costume party or for Halloween, you can end up spending a lot of money on Victorian outfit accessories from a costume shop. Instead of buying the costume accessories pre-made, make them yourself. For example, create your own feather hat pad using a few basic craft materials that can be found at any arts and crafts supply store. This enables you make the Victorian hat pad as decorative and as ornate as you desire.

Instructions

1. Use scissors to cut out two ovals from cotton fabric that measure 4 inches long and 2 inches wide. Select any color fabric that you like. Depending on your needs, you may even want to make several in different colors.

2. Place the two ovals together. Use the needle and thread to sew them together around the edges, leaving a 1/2 inch seam allowance. Leave 1 inch free.

3. Turn the form inside out, and stuff it with 1 oz. of cotton batting. Turn the edges in by 1/2 inch. Sew the opening closed.

4. Heat up a hot glue gun for 5 minutes. Squeeze a ring of hot glue around one side of the oval form that encircles it. Arrange the hot glue circle so that it reaches the edges of the oval.

5. Squeeze hot glue in a grid pattern inside the hot glue circle. Make the grid squares 1/2 inch apart. Be sure to keep the squares as evenly spaced as possible.

6. Lay decorative feathers vertically across the hot glue-covered oval. Cover the glued side of the oval completely with decorative feathers. Allow the oval to cool and harden for 1 minute.

Repeat the process to cover the other side of the oval with decorative feathers.
