Kentucky Derby Hat Ideas

Kentucky Derby hats are bold and colorful.

The Kentucky Derby is a yearly tradition that has come to be more than just a horse race; it's also a fashion spectacle. One of the most popular fashions is the Kentucky Derby Hat. Women of all ages wear brightly colored, bold and creative hats to the derby. Begin by buying a straw hat from any discount or department store, then add accessories of every shape and size. When it comes to finding Kentucky Derby hat ideas, there is only one rule to follow: The bigger and bolder, the better.

Ribbons

Use ribbon to decorate your hat. Buy solid colored or brightly patterned ribbon to match your hat and dress. Measure the circumference of the hat where it meets the brim. Then cut a piece of ribbon and use a hot-glue gun to attach the ribbon to the hat. You can leave extra length at the end of the ribbon and cross it at the back of the hat so it hangs down. Or, make a bow out of the ribbon and glue it on the side or back of the hat. You can also use thin, gift-wrap ribbon and use scissors to curl the ribbon into multiple curly strands. Glue these ribbons on the back or a side of the hat or all around it.

Flowers

Another popular idea: using silk flowers to decorate the brim of your hat. Buy your favorite type of flowers in a variety of colors. They can be as big or as small as you like. Gerber daisies and stargazer lilies are good choices because of their bold colors. You can add just one or two or line the entire hat with flowers big and small. If you have a dark-colored or solid-colored hat, choose colors that stand out. You can also use sprigs of baby's breath to decorate your hat. Place them at an angle so they splay out along the back or side of the hat.

Feathers and Fur

Feathers are often present in hats at the Kentucky Derby. Visit your local crafts store and buy large, colorful feathers. Glue one on so it stands out on an angle at the side of your hat, or buy many and glue them around the hat, filling the brim with them. You can use feathers of various colors, or use all one color that matches your hat. Combine the feathers with fur to wrap around the brim or line the edge of the hat.
