Sketch A Crow

Do sketches of a crow from real life.

Sketching is a great way to draw a crow from real life, a subject that is not likely to stay in place for very long and is fast moving. Sketching is a quick form of drawing, where you focus on capturing the shape of the subject, rather than focusing intently on achieving perfect lines and details. In sketching, you are drawing more intuitively and capturing the essence of the subject. Then you can choose to refine the sketch by adding details later. Create several sketches of the crow in different positions as it hops along a branch, or a quick sketch of the crow in flight.

Instructions

1. Study the outline and shapes of the subject, and keep what you see in your mind's eye. You may have only a small instant where the crow is visible, so keeping what you see in mind will help you draw from memory if needed.

2. Sketch the outline of the crow with a drawing pen in a sketchpad. To sketch, place the pen on the paper and move the pen using fast strokes to capture the details you see. Place light pressure on the pen to do the initial outline sketch, so you can draw over it later to refine details. Keep your eyes on the crow, only glancing occasionally at the paper. Quickly sketch the outline of the head and beak, the body and then the feathers. Finally, sketch the outline of the legs and the claws.

3. Sketch the details of the feathers. Study the shapes of the feathers in the wings and refine your outline sketch. Refine the shapes of the tips of the wings. Then add more details in the wings by quickly sketching the shapes you see. Create small, quick strokes to identify the various lines that make up the feathers.

4. Draw the eyes of the crow. Study the size of the eyes in comparison to the rest of the crow. Crow eyes are very small in comparison to the rest of its body.

5. Sketch the surrounding objects you see, such as a tree branch, leaves or clouds in the sky, if desired.
