Seven Affordable Art Suggestions For Kids' Rooms

Use stencils to make a border for a child's room.

Decorating a kid's room can be expensive, but it does not have to be. Use items found at home and at discount stores to create a new look or to add a few accessories. Use artwork from your child's favorite books to create inexpensive framed artwork. Use stencils to paint a border near the ceiling. Paint a chalkboard on the wall. You don't have to break the bank to create a room your child will be proud of.

Picture Book Art

Use artwork from favorite books to create framed art. Find inexpensive books and frames in all sizes at discount and thrift stores. Shop thrift stores and flea markets to find books with a vintage look.

Stencils

Make a colorful border on walls, near the ceiling, using inexpensive stencils. Find stencils at discount stores and hobby shops, or make them yourself using sturdy paper or cardboard. Use latex or acrylic paint. Allow the paint to dry based on product instructions.

Mobile

Make mobiles using items found at home or at discount stores. Have your child help select objects for the mobile. Try making mobiles out of painted card stock, dowels and ribbons or anything else that strikes your fancy. String the objects on fishing line for an almost invisible hanging system. Tie the fishing line to sticks, or drill small holes in the sticks and thread the line through. Tie the line to an inexpensive hook and twist the hook into the ceiling. Hang the mobiles out of reach of small children, who might be tempted to give them a tug.

Mural

Paint a mural. Select the picture you want to paint on the wall. Ocean scenes and landscapes with castles are fun choices. Create a grid on the picture by using a pencil to draw a checker board pattern on the surface of the photo. Recreate the grid on a larger scale on the wall. Use a pencil to sketch the picture you want to paint. The project is inexpensive, but it will take a little time. The amount of time will depend on the complexity of the design you choose.

Chalkboard Paint

Encourage your child to make the art for his room by painting one wall---or a section of a wall---with chalkboard paint. Inexpensive chalkboard paint can be purchased at home improvement stores and hobby shops. Allow the paint to dry based on the product's instructions. Provide plenty of chalk for your child and the room will be filled with colorful art.

Hanging Quilt

Hang an heirloom quilt to brighten a child's room. Many quilts are works of art and will add pattern and color to a room. If you don't have a quilt, consider making one especially for this purpose by using your child's old clothing. A quilt made of old clothing is almost free to make, and your child will enjoy looking at fabric from some of their favorite outfits. You don't need a special quilt hanger to hang your work of art---simply mount a curtain rod on brackets.

Piñatas

Pinatas are not only for parties, they can also brighten up a room. Choose pinatas that complement the room's design or theme, or chose a pinata just for fun. Find pinatas at discount and party supply stores.
