Pirate Cake Decoration Ideas
When you are throwing a pirate-themed party, don't forget about the cake. Lots of things come to mind when you think about pirates, such as treasure chests, ships, eye patches and pirate hats. Try to incorporate some of these ideas into your cake. Even if you are an inexperienced baker or cake decorator, you can make a pirate cake yourself.
Pirate Ship
Create a pirate ship cake in a few simple steps. First, bake two rectangular sheet cakes. When the cakes are finished, stack them with a layer of chocolate frosting between them. Use a sharp knife to shape one end of the cake into a point, similar to a pirate ship. Next, frost the cake with chocolate frosting. Create a mound of frosting along the edge of the cake to create the sides of the ship. Take pieces of construction paper and cut them into sail shapes. Attach the sails to wooden skewers and push them into the cake. Put blue frosting onto your cake pan to resemble the ocean. Add the finishing touch by placing pirate figurines on the deck of the ship.
Pirate Hat
Make a cake that looks like a pirate hat. Bake one round cake. After the cake has cooled, cut off about a quarter of the bottom of the cake. Take the piece you cut off and cut it in two down the middle. Next, place one of those pieces on either side of the larger cake piece, making sure the flat edges line up. Now you have your pirate hat shape. Frost the cake with black icing. If you can't find black frosting in the store, choose white frosting and dye it with food coloring. Then, pipe a red border around the edge of the cake. Draw a skull and crossbones in the center of the hat. For extra embellishment, stick a feather into the hat where the brim would be.
Treasure Chest
Make a cake that resembles a treasure chest for your pirate-themed party. Bake two or three rectangular or square cake layers. Once the layers have baked and cooled, stack them with a layer of chocolate frosting between them. Next, frost the cake in chocolate. Use a toothpick and create wood grain lines in the frosting. Next, cover the top of the cake with lots of pirate "booty." You can purchase these items at a party store or even a dollar store. Choose chocolate gold coins, ring pops and candy necklaces. Let the treasure spill down the sides of the chest as if it is overflowing. Next, wash and dry the cake pan you used to bake the cakes. Put a layer of chocolate frosting on the pan and prop it up on the cake to serve as the treasure chest's lid.
