Memory games can be a fun way to teach children to memorize Bible verses.
Christian parents wishing to educate their children about their faith often help youngsters memorize Bible verses. Memorization need not be a dry, dull process, as there is a wide variety of resources that provide tips on memory games designed specifically to help children memorize passages from the Bible.
Tips for Memory Games
The website eBibleTeacher recommends the use of music in memorization, since most people find it easier to remember verses when they're tied to a melody (in much the same way young children learn the ABC song). Another helpful tip is to combine memorization with some sort of physical activity, such as counting on fingers, using hand motions or even acting out the verse as if it were part of a game of charades.
Feather Relay
Suggested by the website Sunday School Resources, the Feather Relay begins with children separated into two or three groups. With the groups standing in lines at one end of the room, the teacher stands at the other end and gives the first child in each line a paper plate with a feather on it. When the teacher tells them to begin, the children with the plates must walk from one end of the room to the other, ensuring the feather does not fly off. After reaching the other end, students must recite a pre-ordained Bible verse to the teacher, then walk back and pass the plate and feather to the next student in line. If the feather falls off the plate or the child incorrectly recites the verse, he or she must walk back and start over. The first team to have all its members correctly recite the verse wins.
Carved in Stone
This activity, also suggested by Sunday School Resources, involves children carving verses into a flat piece of limestone, approximately 24 inches by 30 inches and one inch thick. Write a Bible verse on the stone with a marker, and the children will carve the verse into the stone with a flat, pointed chisel and hammers (with safety goggles worn at all times). The end result will be a hand-made keepsake that will also help them memorize that particular verse.
Memory Verse Basketball
The website Kids Sunday School suggests Memory Verse Basketball, which uses an inexpensive Nerf basketball and hoop. Children are asked to open their Bibles to a specific verse, which they then repeat several times. Place the children in two lines, and ask a member of each team to repeat the verse verbatim from memory. If the child says the verse correctly, he can shoot the ball; if not, the child goes to the end of the line. The first team to reach 21 baskets wins.
