An Apple iPod can store anywhere from 200 to 40,000 songs, depending on the hard drive size. While the newer iPod Touch models allow you to download music using Wi-Fi, every iPod allows you to transfer songs from your computer using an included USB or FireWire cable. If you still have not gotten the hang of using the iPod, you might find yourself confused as to make the appropriate transfer.
Instructions
1. Connect your iPod to your computer. For best results, connect to a USB port directly on you PC, using your iPod USB cable. If you connect to a USB port on your PC keyboard or on an external USB hub, you might have insufficient power for the iPod.
2. Open iTunes. Apple recommends using its iTunes digital media player to manage music and other content for your iPod, but you can also use a third-party media player, as long it has iPod compatibility. Examples include MediaMonkey, Senuti and Touch Copy. When you open your software, locate your iPod device in the left column.
3. Drag songs into your media player library. If you already have your music saved in iTunes or your other preferred media player, skip this step. Otherwise, drag music files (such as MP3, AIF and WAV files) directly from your hard drive onto the media player window.
4. Set your syncing preferences. iTunes lets you decide whether you want to sync automatically or manually. If you choose the automatic option, iTunes will automatically sync its library to your iPod each time you connect. If you choose the manual option, you must manually drag music files and playlists from your library onto the iPod device. Click "iPod" in the left column and check the box that reads "Manually manage," if you prefer the manual option. Leave unchecked for the automatic option. If using a third-party program, you might need to manually sync your music.
5. Sync your music. If you chose the manual sync option, your music transfers to the iPod on its own. If you chose the automatic option, click your "Music" library, select songs with your mouse and drag them onto the iPod image.
6. Eject your iPod. Ejecting is essential to ensure that the syncing process succeeds. Beside the iPod image, locate the circular "Eject" symbol, featuring a picture of a triangle and a horizontal line. Click it once. Disconnect your iPod.
