Indian Crafts Using Coffee Grinds

Native American Indians use earth tones and natural objects in their art.

Instead of throwing away your used coffee grounds, save them for fun and useful crafts. The color coffee grinds impart is a natural fit for Indian themed crafts, including fossil rocks and treasure stones.

Homemade Fossils

Stir the together 1 cup of used coffee grounds, 1/2 cup of cold coffee, 1 cup of flour, and 1/2 cup of salt until well mixed. Flatten dough onto waxed paper and use a can to cut circles out of the dough. Press natural items or Indian themed objects firmly into the dough and remove. When you take the object out, you have a fossil. Let the fossil dry overnight.

Treasure Stone

Mix 1 cup flour, 1 cup used coffee grinds, 1/2 cup salt and 1/4 cup sand together. Slowly add water to make a stiff dough. Knead on a floured surface until smooth. Break dough into desired rock sizes. Hide Native themed toys and surprises in the center of a ball of dough. Dry for 3 to 4 days. Once dry, the dough will look and feel like a rock. Help children break open the rocks with a hammer to reveal the hidden treasures inside.

Paintings

Make water color paints by soaking coffee grounds in water. Steep the coffee longer for darker colored water. For textured look, use glue and sprinkle coffee grounds directly onto the painting surface.

Homemade Cards

Create aged and natural looking paper by soaking plain paper in a coffee bath. Experiment with various types of paper and length of time in the bath. Use this paper to create homemade cards. Embellish with beads, stickers and feathers to create a native look.
