Osteoarthritis is a painful condition that afflicts millions of Americans long before the onset of the golden years. In the unfortunate case of osteoarthritis, cartilage, which is like a pillow cushioning the joints of our knees, weakens. The cushion wears down, causing pain when rising from squatting, sitting and, worst of all, simply walking from one point to another. Fortunately, there are two types of treatment available when regular over-the-counter pain medications lose their effectiveness.
Hyalgan
One such treatment is Hyalgan, which is made up of contents containing hyaluronate, an enzyme naturally found in the body. It's like the feathers in the pillow cushioning the joints of our knees. Over time, those feathers deteriorate and disappear. Our knees, however, are not as simply replaced as a pillow. Hyalgan is an injection provided by a doctor, which you might want to think of as a seamstress refilling your pillow with fresh feathers. Five weekly injections by a medical provider and are said to provide relief for as long as six months.
Synvisc
Another such treatment is called Synvisc, and the feathers for this pillow are produced from chicken combs, a type of fleshy growth found on the top of chickens heads. Synvisc requires three weekly injections by a medical professional and, in clinical trials, has proven to provide relief for up to six months.
Which One Is Right for Me
Hyalgan has proven to be a source of pain relief with as little as three injections for as long as six months. However, it can cause a serious allergic reaction to those suffering from allergies to any medication containing any amount of hyaluronan. Indications of a potential allergic reaction include allergies to poultry, eggs and bird feathers. Synvisc has also proven to cause severe allergic reactions in people with the same allergy to hyaluronan, while additionally may cause headaches or upset stomach. However, an independent study conducted by a team of doctors from Hull Royal Infirmary state that the lasting effects of Synvisc are greater than any other competing medication.
When Not to Medicate
You shouldn't take Synvisc and Hyalgan if you are planning on becoming pregnant, you are pregnant or are breast feeding. Report all medications and dietary supplements you may be taking to your health care provider before beginning treatment with either medication as some drugs may present adverse affects. This is especially true if you are taking any amount of Quaternary ammonium salt.
Pain Management
Why suffer with painful knee joints when those joints can be treated and pain free with something so simple as a mere injection in as little as three days. You can feel younger, again. All you have to do is take the first step. Call your health care provider and tell him you want to start treatments today.
