Native American Indian Crafts For Scouts

Scouts can build tepees using household items.

In addition to performing services to help others and taking on the rigors of camping outings, both Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts are encouraged to learn about other cultures. Native American craft projects can teach Scouts about the beliefs and attitudes of current and past Native American people.

Dream Catcher

Dream catchers are designed to "capture" bad dreams while allowing good dreams to pass through. A metal or twine hoop serves as the base, and a length of string is tied at either side of the hoop. Strings intersect in the hollow space inside of the hoop, and space is left open in the center to allow the "good" dreams to pass through. Dream catchers are often decorated with beads, feathers and other decorative ornaments.

Rainstick

Rainsticks were used in Native American ceremonies to encourage the gods to bring rain to the people. A cardboard tube or paper towel tube can be decorated with colorful paper, beads, stickers and other objects to recreate a rainstick.

Totem Pole

Totem poles are meant to tell the story of a family's ancestry, and often depict both humans and animals. Common animals include eagles, bears, wolves and bats. To recreate this object, Scouts can cover a cardboard tube with decorative paper and draw faces of animals going vertically up and down the tube; faces should not be side-by-side. Kids can also create wings to attach to the sides of the totem pole.

Tepee

Tepees served as the home of many Native Americans. They were usually made from animal hides and tree limbs. Scouts can use twigs or craft sticks to create the form of the tepee and cover it with paper. They can then cut out a hole in the side of the tepee to serve as a doorway and decorate as desired.
