A wire hanger is usually used as a secure base in homemade centerpiece projects. The wire hanger is usually bent in a circle to create a wreath decoration or the hook is straightened to act as a stem while the hanger body is decorated. Though most wire hanger centerpieces tend to be kid-oriented, it's also possible to create elegant centerpieces with the common household item. To create a fan-shaped wire hanger centerpiece, you're going to need some long black feathers dusted with silver glitter.
Instructions
1. Straighten the hook part of the wire hanger with the pliers. Stretch the bottom middle of the hanger using the pliers and your fingers so it curves outward in a semi-circle. Hold now-the straight wire hook for a handle and make sure the shape resembles the outline of a hand-held fan.
2. Place the body of the wire hanger fan centerpiece on top of a piece of black craft foam. Trace the shape of the fan, excluding the handle, onto the foam. Cut out the foam shape. Trace and cut out a second, matching shape.
3. Place one foam shape on a flat surface and cover it with craft glue. Place the wire hanger on the foam so that the handle sticks out at the bottom and the foam is 1/4 inch longer than the top of the wire. Place the second piece of foam on top of the hanger so that it matches up with the first piece. Press the foam pieces together so that they create a smooth seam around the wire. Let dry.
4. Place the wire hanger fan centerpiece on a flat surface. Place a 20-inch, glitter-dusted feather on the left side of the foam, so that it hangs slightly off the form. Stitch the bottom of the feather to the foam fan, using a sewing needle and black thread. Loop the thread around the base of the stem a few times. Secure in a knot and cut off the excess thread.
5. Repeat step 4 to cover the fan with feathers, placing feathers to the right of each other as you go and keeping the feathers close together.
6. Flip the fan over and sew the feathers across the back. You should end up with a large, black, feather fan with a thin wire handle.
7. Cut a piece of 20-inch long black ribbon. Loop the ribbon around the base of the wire hanger fan centerpiece, where the bottom stems of the feathers cluster together. Pull the ribbon tight and wrap it around the stems and downward along the thin wire handle. Tie the ribbon in a tight knot at the bottom and cut off any excess.
8. Place the handle of the wire hanger fan centerpiece in a black cylinder vase. Pour decorative white stones into the vase to secure the handle in place.
