Avoid Losing My Tan

Deep tans develop over a long period of time.

After working hard to get a golden glow, you'll need to maintain your tan regularly to keep it. There's no safe permanent way to tan your skin: The dark, sexy color is only temporary. Whether you've opted for the sunless treatment, or gone the old-fashioned route, you'll need to keep working on your suntan. Over time, a natural tan will reach a nice deep color that will require less maintenance, but sunless tanners fight a never-ending battle.

Instructions

Sun Tanning

1. Cover your body with a suntanning lotion that contains an SPF of 15 or higher. You'll want to tan, while providing your skin some protection from harmful UV rays.

2. Apply tanning lotion with an SPF of 30 to your face and neck. This area is more sensitive to sun triggered discoloration from melanin.

3. Set a timer for 15 minutes. Lie on a sheet or blanket in the sun, until the timer goes off. Turn over and tan the opposite side an equal amount of time. Do this twice a week, to maintain your color.

4. Shower away the tanning lotion using a body wash. Rinse and pat the skin dry.

5. Apply a body lotion that contains a subtle tint to your skin. You may prolong your tan, if the lotion contains vitamin A.

Sunless Tanning

6. Exfoliate your skin lightly, once a week in a shower. Rinse away the exfoliant and pat the skin dry.

7. Reapply the sunless tanning product to your entire body, starting at the feet and legs and working upwards.

8. Rinse excess lotion from your hands and from in between the toes. Allow your skin to dry for six hours before showering or swimming.
