Thanksgiving Focal point Suggestions For Children

Pinecones remind guests of the fall season.

Thanksgiving is a time to show gratitude for everything you have and a time to celebrate with family and loved ones. While you're in the kitchen working on dinner, encourage the kids to help out by making a centerpiece for the table. Everyone that attends the dinner will find themselves face-to-face with the fun display. Thanksgiving centerpiece ideas for kids make use of common crafting items and items the kids find around the house or yard.

Turkey Basket

Create a turkey from a bread basket and some craft supplies. Ask the kids to trace a feather outline on different sheets of construction paper and cut the feathers out. Have the kids cut more feather shapes slightly smaller than the original feather outline from sheets of wrapping paper. Lay the construction paper feather flat and place a dab of glue and a wood skewer on top. Apply another dab of glue and press the wrapping paper feather on top. Repeat the process with all of the feathers. Place a piece of floral foam in the bottom of the basket and stick the feathers in the back. Glue a red beak and googly eyes to the wooden spoon and insert that in the front of the basket. Line the basket with a colorful napkin and use for bread.

Give Thanks

Find an assortment of glass or plastic vases, cups or another type of container. Ask the kids to gather pinecones from the yard. Or, gather colorful leaves ahead of time and dry to remove any moisture. Have the kids cut round shapes from pieces of construction paper and write a letter on each piece, spelling out "Give Thanks." Cut an equal amount of round shapes and repeat the writing. Glue the letters together with a wooden skewer in the middle. Line the containers down the middle of the table and place one letter in each container, so that the message appears on both sides of the table.

Harvest Basket

Help the kids paint an old basket with gold, copper or brass colored paint. After the paint dries, line the basket with a cloth napkin that complements the new color of the basket. Ask the kids to gather pinecones from the yard and paint those in autumn colors, such as red and yellow. Fill the basket with the pinecones and display in the center of the table.

Tissue Paper Turkey

Place a piece of red tissue paper on the table and set a sheet of orange tissue paper on top, making sure that the orange is slightly smaller than the red. Arrange yellow and brown tissue paper on top, making those sheets smaller as well. Fold the tissue paper into an accordion shape and secure a pipe cleaner around the middle, before unfolding the sheets. Repeat the folding process with sheets of brown and red tissue paper. Unfold the tissue paper and scrunch it slightly. Twist a pipe cleaner into a hook shape and wrap in red tissue paper. When you twist all the pipe cleaners together, the tissue paper resembles a turkey.
