Parakeets are members of the parrot family.
Parakeets are one of the most common birds kept as pets. They remain small and are strikingly colored. Parakeets can be found in a variety of color variations, but are usually yellow, green or bright blue. These birds are friendly, quiet and easy to care for, making them a good choice for a beginner bird owner.
Appearance
Wild parakeets are usually green. However, in captivity, parakeets can be found in shades of whites, yellows, spotted patterns, and, of course, blue. Blue parakeets are usually a sky blue color, with some white on their heads. Black stripes and darker blue patches might also be visible near the head and neck of a blue parakeet, as well as near the tail feathers. Parakeets have rounded beaks, which are usually yellow or a pale color, and long tail feathers. They tend to grow to about 7 to 9 inches long.
Native Habitat
Parakeets, also known as budgerigars, originally come from Australia, and several islands near Australia, such as New Zealand. Parakeets are social birds and form large family flocks. These flocks can number into the thousands and create quite a show when they take off into the air all together. Today, many blue parakeets sold as pets are born and raised in captivity. Breeders usually choose birds with brilliant coloring and sweet personalities.
Temperament
Parakeets are very social, friendly birds. In the wild, they live in large flocks. In captivity, this trait translates to a loving, affectionate bird. Parakeets enjoy spending time with their owners, who they consider part of their flock. Parakeets can be kept in pairs or groups, but this sometimes means the parakeets will be more affectionate toward each other and show less affection for their human owner. Parakeets are receptive to training and can be taught many tricks.
Care
Parakeets require large aviaries, at least 20 inches long, one foot wide and 18 inches tall, although larger cages are even better. Perches and parakeet toys can be placed in the cage to give the blue parakeet something to do or a place to rest. Parakeets require fresh food, such as seed mixes and fresh food treats, and clean water every day. The soiled bedding in the cage will also need to be replaced daily. Parakeets enjoy a lot of attention from their owners. Blue parakeets also need to spend time out of their aviary when they can exercise and interact with their handlers.
