Create A Feather Brooch

Feather brooches with bejeweled bases make for a cute addition to a otherwise plain blazer, sweater or hat. Fancy feather brooches generally sell for high prices at craft sales and artisan fairs, but you can make your own quite easily and inexpensively. With a few craft store supplies, you can put together a wide variety of feathered brooches to jazz up your wardrobe and reflect your own personal sense of style.

Instructions

1. Cut a circle from a stiff piece of crafting felt with scissors, in whatever diameter you prefer. This circle will serve as the base of your brooch. Glue fabric, faux jewels, buttons, sequins or other decorative items onto the face of the circle with a hot glue gun. If desired, glue some ribbon or ruffles along the edge of the back of the circle, for extra decoration.

2. Glue the bottom ends of the feathers to the back of the felt circle, so that the tops of the feathers stick out and are visible from the front of the brooch. Choose brightly colored feathers that complement the colors used for the decorations on the front of the base, or use neutral feathers for a more natural look. Do not glue the feathers around the perimeter of the entire circle. For a minimalist look, only glue on a few feathers. Full a fuller effect, overlap and glue the feathers around about one-third of the perimeter of the felt circle.

3. Cut a second felt circle of the same size, and glue it to the back of the brooch, sandwiching the feather ends between the two felt discs. Apply glue around the entire circumference of the second felt circle, so that it's completely secure. Glue a brooch pin to the back of the second circle. Allow the glue to dry thoroughly before attaching the brooch to your clothing.
