Thanksgiving Activities & Crafts For Youthful Children

Construction paper
is handy around when creating Thanksgiving crafts.

Thanksgiving crafts are one way to prepare for the holiday. Using common craft items and things found around the house, young crafters can entertain themselves for hours making one-of-kind items to decorate the house or to give away. Choose crafts that match young children's skill level and let creativity take over.

Turkey Crafts

Pinecones transform into a Thanksgiving turkey with a little help.

Turkeys can be made entirely out of paper by helping young children trace and cut out their hand print to make the turkey's tail feathers. A paper cup painted brown becomes the turkey's body. The feathers attach with a bit of glue or tape. Googly eyes or hand-drawn eyes, a wattle and feet made from construction paper finish the turkey. A pine cone turkey is easy to make with an acorn head and construction paper feathers. For a truly personalized turkey, children trace both feet on construction paper and several hand prints, too. Once cut out, the heels are overlapped to become the body of the turkey and the hand prints make a full tail. Crayons bring the face to life.

Fall Wreath Crafts

A colorful fall wreath comes to life with construction paper or foam.

Colorful wreaths come together simply and quickly. The base is formed with foam or cardboard cut into the shape of a wreath and painted an appropriate color. Construction paper or foam leaves cover the wreath once they are arranged properly. Children decorate the wreath or write something he is thankful for on each leave before attaching it to the wreath to add extra meaning to the project. This craft easily lends itself to classrooms or playgroups because each child can decorate several leaves. Another option is to create a tree instead of a wreath as the base.

Place Card Crafts

Dinner guests can take place cards home.

Children who will attend a special Thanksgiving dinner can decorate place cards for each guest. Card stock provides a sturdy material, as well as construction paper, foam or small wooden plaques. Children should use materials appropriate to their age. Crayons, markers, paints and stickers allow children to decorate the place cards. Guests can take their place card home as a souvenir of the gathering.

Coloring Pages and Templates

Crayons help children personalize coloring pages and worksheets.

Young children typically love to color, and hundreds of printable coloring sheets and workbook pages are available online at sites such as Enchanted Learning and DLTK's Growing Together. Pilgrim templates help transform empty toilet paper tubes into table decorations, for instance. Worksheets that teach Thanksgiving-themed words in other languages and counting also can keep children busy during a holiday gathering.
