Create A Parakeet Nesting Box

Make a Parakeet Nesting Box

When you are fairly sure that your pair of pet parakeets are going to be parents and the female is ready to lay eggs, you will need to help her make a nesting home within the cage--a dark, warm place where she will feel safe and comfortable laying the eggs, tending to them and caring for her hatchlings. If you don't want to buy a nesting box, you can make one.

Instructions

1. Take a clean, small box with lid (6 by 6 inch is a good size for parakeets) and tape the lid down securely. Make sure the tape is smoothed down to prevent the birds from pecking at it.

2. Using the utility knife, cut a smooth 2-inch diameter hole in the front of the box, right below the lid. Cut two or three tiny holes in the back or side of the box so you can look inside without disturbing the birds.

3. Insert nesting material through the hold (shredded fabric or newspaper, hay or dried grass). Leave some out on the floor of the cage so the female can feel like she's preparing her own nest to take inside the nesting box.

4. Position the box on the bottom of the cage in a space where the parakeets have no trouble entering and where they will feel safe.
