Instructions To Create Fairy Wings

Make your own pair of fairy wings with wire and nylon stockings.

If you are planning to dress up as a fairy for your next costume party, you may be finding it difficult to find the perfect pair of fairy wings. Fortunately, you can make your own wings right at home. All you need are some simple craft supplies and a little artistic skill. The best part about making your own fairy wings is you can personalize them by adding glitter, crystals and other decorative touches.

Instructions

1. Cut a 4-foot length of wire and bend it into a single upper-wing shape. Wrap electric tape 3 inches into both ends of the upper wing wire to connect the frame. Repeat this step for the second upper wing.

2. Cut a 3 1/2-foot length of wire for the bottom wing, and bend it to the wing shape. Wrap electrical tape around both ends--about 3 inches on both ends--of the bottom wing to connect the frame. Repeat this step for the second bottom wing.

3. Slide a stocking over each wire wing shape, wrapping the excess nylon fabric around the inner part of the wing. Tape the nylon stockings at the inner part of the wing with electric tape. Don't worry about how it looks at this point; the tape will be covered later on.

4. Draw a fairy wing design on each wing with an invisible fabric pen, then paint the designs with acrylic paint. Shake glitter on the wings while the paint is still wet.

5. Glue crystals to the fairy wings by putting a small dab of glue on each crystal and placing it on the wings with tweezers.

6. Carefully make a slit in each wing near the inner part of the wing that is wide enough for the electric tape. The slits should be near the place where you had electric tape to secure the nylon. You will need two slits on each wing; one on each side of the nylon. Secure the wings together with electric tape by wrapping electric tape around the inner part of the wings through the slits in the nylon.

7. Cover the electrical tape on the wings by wrapping wide-edged ribbon through the slits in the nylon and wrapping around the tape until it is hidden. Secure the ribbon with hot glue.
