Feathers are a dashing addition to a dressy hat.
A hat is the perfect accessory to top off a classy ensemble. If you love to sew, you can make your own dressy hats to suit any outfit. Even if you've never touched a sewing machine in your life, you can dress up old hats with new accouterments such as lace, beads and pins -- there's no end to the things you can do to personalize a hat. A dressy hat can make an otherwise unremarkable outfit crackle with originality.
Instructions
1. Pick out the type of hat you want. Some hats are nothing more than a circle of fabric that is pinned to the head, while others have wide brims that shade the face. Look through a book of hat patterns and pick one that fits your style. Or, go to a thrift store and buy a simple hat that can easily be adorned.
2. Choose your colors and material. If there's a specific outfit you want to wear the hat with, buy fabric in a material and color that complements it. If you want an all-purpose dressy hat, go with a single bold color or a neutral color. Shiny material or velvet can add a dressy flair to the hat.
3. Assemble the hat. Measure your head to get the correct sizing if necessary, then follow the pattern to cut and piece the hat together.
4. Prepare the ornaments of your choice. Be creative -- use buttons, lace, feathers, beads, or old brooches. Assemble the ornaments in the pattern that you want them on the hat.
5. Use a combination of fabric adhesive and needle and thread to affix the ornaments to the hat. Needle and thread provides a stronger bond, but some ornaments are difficult to sew on and need glue.
6. Wipe off any stray globs of adhesive, then let the adhesive dry for the amount of time specified on the package.
