Oil spills injure and kill animals in the wild, and can be dangerous to both humans and animals. The chemicals found in oil can damage an animal's fur, which is their primary protection against cold temperatures and harsh elements. Learn the proper way to remove oil from an animal's hair or fur to ensure their safety and prevent unnecessary death.
Instructions
1. Secure the mouth of a mammal with a muzzle to avoid being bitten. Wrap ordinary tape around a bird's beak. Be careful not to obstruct their airway, and do this only when necessary. Put on disposable gloves; if they are thin gloves, wear two gloves on top of each other for sufficient protection. Absorb excess oil from the animal's body with paper towels.
2. Place warm water inside a plastic tub and put the animal inside. Wash off the oil using dishwashing soap or dishwashing liquid. Wash in sections, starting with the tail and moving onto the legs, torso, upper back, chest, neck and finally the head. Remove excess oil from the animal's skin and hair with a toothbrush or small scrub brush.
3. Rinse the animal in clean, warm water until all of the soap residue has been removed. Dry the animal with a clean towel.
4. Secure the animal inside of a cage and place it in a warm area to allow the animal's fur to air dry. Offer the animal food and water to ensure its speedy recover.
