Swans represent beauty and grace.
The image of the swan brings to mind the beauty and grace of the birds gliding across a still pool. The idea that swans represent beauty, grace and purity brings them into the realm of art. Steel wire bends easily, making it an easier medium to sculpt with than bronze. Additionally, the long sweeping lines of bent wire create the illusion of living grace. Display your sculpture on the wall, or use the metal shape as the base for topiary.
Instructions
1. Draw a picture of your swan on paper with a marker. Keep the lines simple. Try to draw or trace over the lines without picking up the pen. Drawing the entire picture in a single line establishes a design in which you can bend a single wire without cutting or welding a new wire into place.
2. Pin the picture on cork board with T-pins.
3. Put on gloves to protect your hands. Start working the wire where you started your line on the paper. Bend the wire in long graceful lines to match the lines of the swan on the paper. Hold the wire in place with the T-pins after bending.
4. Bend the wire with needle-nosed pliers for sharp angles or spirals to represent features such as the swan's feathers or feet.
5. Wind both ends of the wire to the sculpture to hold them securely in place.
6. Remove the T-pins carefully, one at a time. If the wire loses its shape when a pin is removed, bend it again.
