Handprint Dove Craft

Doves are an important religious symbol.

Doves are a symbol of peace and of hope. Christians use the dove as a symbol for the Holy Spirit, based on Matthew 3:16. Both the dove and the fish helped early Christians identify one another during times of religious persecution. Sunday school and vacation Bible school teachers also use the dove in the story of Noah's ark. Handprint dove crafts can remind children of the Bible lesson or encourage them to seek peace.

Peace Dove Wreath

In the center of a white paper plate, trace around the tightly closed four fingers with the thumb extended. Draw an eye on the thumb as the dove's head and use an orange marker to make the beak. Add more lines between the finger lines for tail feathers. Place legs under the body of the dove and draw a folded wing against the dove's side. Draw ivy or stable artificial ivy strands around the rim of the plate. Add a bow and a loop of ribbon to the top edge of the plate. Write "Peace" inside the greenery.

Dove Ornament

Spread the fingers of your hand and place it on a piece of card stock. Trace around it. Repeat the process with the other hand. Cut out both handprints and glue the thumb and palm sections together. Fold the three middle fingers down toward the back of the hand to make wings. Push the little finger section toward the back of the bird and add more slits to resemble tail feathers. Add an eye to each side of the head and triangles for the beak. Punch a small hole where the dove's wings come together. Slip a piece of ribbon through the hole and tie the ends together as a hanger.

Tissue Handprint Dove

Draw the body of the dove on white card stock or print a pattern off the Internet. Draw the face and body details on both sides of the dove. With fingers only slightly spread, trace around each hand and about a half inch down onto the wrist. Glue the hands to either side of body using the wrist section as your point of contact. Bend the hand section down toward the body to create wings. Cut white tissue paper into 1-inch squares and wad each piece into a ball. Pick each ball up with tweezers and dip into white glue. Press the wads onto the dove's body below the head. Glue down feathers onto the wings and tail feathers. Punch a small hole in the head and insert a ribbon to hand the dove.

Noah's Dove

On white card stock, trace the hand with tightly closed fingers and the thumb extended. Draw the dove's face on the thumb. Add more lines to the dove's tail section. Accordion pleat a 4-inch square sheet of copy paper. Place a slit in the back of the dove and insert the accordion pleat. Spread to make wings. Add a green leaf to the beak.
