Tell Age A Peachfronted Conure

Peach-fronted conures, which are popular members of the parrot family, are endangered in their native habitat of central South America. Peach-fronts are easily identified by the bright peach color of their forehead and crown. There are several ways to determine the age of a peach-fronted conure, although doing so based solely on physical indicators can be tricky.

Instructions

1. Check the conure for a leg band. Most peach-fronted conures are given a leg band that is embossed with numbers. One of the sets of numbers should identify the year, and in some cases the exact day and month, when the bird was born.

2. Examine the conure for bright orange feathers surrounding its white eye rings. If there aren't any orange feathers, or if the orange isn't very bright, your bird is less than 2 years old. At around 2, as the peach-fronted conure reaches sexual maturity, its orange feathers will become vivid.

3. Look to see if the peach-fronted conure still has its baby feathers. Conures molt for the first time when they are six or seven months old; if the conure doesn't have its adult feathers yet, then it is still only a few months old.

4. Check the bird for wrinkled facial skin and feather loss. Conures can live up to 25 years, so if your conure has these physical traits, it might be more than 20 years old. However, parrots can lose feathers for many reasons at any stage in their life.

5. Ask your veterinarian to determine your conure's age if you are having trouble figuring it out yourself. Any veterinarian who specializes in birds should be able to tell you the age of your peach-fronted conure.
