Flamingo's Habitat
Flamingos are well known for their pink plumage that makes them easily recognizable. Their pink hue come from carotenoid pigments found in the food sources they consume. The intensity of their coloration ranges from an almost white pale pink to reddish. Flamingos usually inhabit tropical areas and are found in several parts of the world.
Habitat
Flamingos are found in tropical and subtropical climates. They live in a variety of habitats including lagoons, large alkaline lakes, swamps, islands and shallow marshes.
Nests
Flamingos make their nests in a high mound of mud. Both males and females take part in the building of nests and incubating the egg.
Migration
Although flamingos are normally migratory birds, they may migrate to warmer areas due to drought, lack of food or climate change.
Fish
Flamingos are not usually found in lake areas that are populated with fish. They prefer areas where they do not have to compete with the fish for food.
Adaptation
Flamingos are fairly adaptable birds that can live in several inhospitable areas. They inhabit lakes with high salt concentrations and swampy, mud-filled areas. Their webbed feet support them on soft mud and their long legs allow them to wade in deep water as they search for food. They can also drink water at near boiling temperatures and excrete salt through their nostrils.
Geographic Location
Flamingos are found in several geographic locations. The Chilean flamingo is found in Chile, parts of South America, Brazil, Argentina and other areas. James' flamingo and the Andean flamingo are found in Peru, Chile, Argentina and Bolivia. The Lesser flamingo is found primarily in Africa and India. The Greater flamingo is found in the Middle East, India, parts of Europe, Africa and the Mediterranean. The Caribbean flamingo is found throughout the Bahamas and Caribbean region.
